Jones 'Asiatic Beauties' Pearlware Plates, Circa 1835

A rare find. The underside backstamp reading “Picturesque Asiatic Beauties” with decorative scrollwork and stylized pavilion motifs confirms these plates as part of the early 19th-century transferware pattern produced by the Staffordshire maker Jones, circa 1835. The printed mark, rendered in underglaze blue, is typical of the period and helps securely date the pieces to the pearlware era.

These mid-blue transfer-printed plates feature a romanticized Indian landscape at the center, depicting elegantly dressed figures in conversation within an idealized garden setting. Architectural elements—domed pavilions, towers, and distant structures—create a theatrical backdrop framed by trees and foliage. The richly ornamented floral border fills the scalloped rim with blossoms and scrolling detail, characteristic of the 1830s aesthetic.

The plates are made of pearlware, identifiable by the slightly bluish tint of the glaze, which enhances the cobalt transfer design. This refined earthenware was widely used in Staffordshire between the late 18th century and the 1840s, before being gradually replaced by whiteware.

Patterns such as “Picturesque Asiatic Beauties” reflect Britain’s fascination with imagined Indian scenes rather than accurate depictions.  Early marked examples like these are especially desirable to collectors for their clear backstamp, strong mid-blue color, and well-preserved detail.
