Mason’s Ironstone Chinoiserie Floral Jar

A finely preserved Mason’s Ironstone lidded jar, decorated with an elaborate chinoiserie-style floral composition in a rich yet balanced palette of pinks, ochres, blues, and greens, outlined in Mason’s characteristic sepia transfer lines. The softly rounded, ginger-jar–inspired form is topped with its original fitted lid—an important detail for collectors.

Backstamp & dating
The base bears the Mason’s crown mark with the wording “Patent Ironstone China – England” and “Guaranteed Acid Resisting Colours.” This particular backstamp is associated with Mason’s late Victorian to early Edwardian production, dating the piece confidently to the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1890–1910). The “acid resisting colours” claim reflects advances in ceramic decoration at the time, emphasising durability and colourfastness—qualities for which Mason’s ironstone was internationally admired.

For collectors
By this period, Mason’s had refined its identity as a maker of richly decorated yet exceptionally robust wares. Chinoiserie-inspired patterns remained popular, drawing on imagined Eastern motifs filtered through English decorative taste. Lidded jars of this size were used as tea caddies, general storage vessels, or purely ornamental pieces, often displayed prominently on sideboards or in cabinets.

Examples retaining their original lid, with clear backstamps and unfaded enamels, are increasingly sought after—particularly those that showcase the exuberant patterning for which Mason’s is best known.
