Portmeirion Parian Ware Jug

Portmeirion's Parian Ware jug from the British Heritage Collection revives a cherished Victorian design, captivating collectors with its historical depth and exquisite craftsmanship. Historical Origins

Originally designed and published by Samuel Alcock & Co. in Burslem, Staffordshire, on July 1st, 1842, the "Gipsey" jug features intricate relief-moulding of a woodland Gypsy encampment, complete with tents, figures (including children and a dog), draped fabrics, and a cauldron over a fire. Alcock's factory thrived in the 1840s, producing at least 27 relief-moulded jug designs.

Material and Craftsmanship

Crafted from Parian porcelain—a fine, unglazed bisque with a matt, ivory-white surface mimicking Parian marble—this jug preserves the delicate modelling of Victorian originals without glossy interference. The high-relief scene wraps the baluster body, with an elegant scroll handle, flared spout, and footed base, typically measuring 14-15 cm (5.5-6 inches) tall. Portmeirion perfected a specialized technique to replicate the bisque finish, part of a Heritage collection including jugs, bud vases, Portland vase replicas, figurines, and Neptune planters.
